For many years, plasma TVs have been considered the best flat screen televisions on the market. However, as technology improved, LCD and LED TVs have improved in quality and can now rival plasma TVs in most aspects.
Until the invention of LED TVs, Plasma TVs were the clear winner when it came to picture quality. Plasmas tend to have better contrast ratios and colour saturation than LCD TVs, and can be viewed from almost any angle. However, LED screens improve upon LCD technology by replacing the backlight with light emitting diodes (LEDs) located on the side of the screen panel. LED TVs can therefore provide richer and deeper blacks than LCD TVs. Because of this new technology, LED TVs can also be viewed from almost any angle, putting them on equal footing with plasma TVs.
TV resolution is a vital factor to consider if you want your TV to be able to display full HD signals. Flat screen TVs are generally available in two formats: HD ready and full HD. An HD ready TV, such as the Samsung 43 inch HD ready plasma, has an aspect ratio of 1,024 x 768 pixels, while a full HD TV, such as the Samsung 40 inch full HD LED TV, has an aspect ratio of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Full HD TVs tend to be noticeably more expensive but offer better image quality than HD ready TVs.
- Effect on the environment
While TVs are not often mentioned in global warming and pollution reports, they too have an effect on the environment. LCD TVs are the least eco-friendly of the three television types because they use mercury to produce an image. Because of this, plasma TVs have been more popular among the environmentally conscious. However, LED screen TVs, which use very similar technology to LCD TVs, incorporate new lighting technology that does not use mercury and is therefore eco-friendly.
In a consumer-driven world, the cost of a product is also a very important consideration. LCD TVs are generally the cheapest high-end TV on the market and LED TVs are the most expensive. However, LED TVs are relatively new on the market and may decrease in price as demand for them increases. Plasma TVs tend to be priced between LCD and LED TVs.
It is important to mention that there are many factors that affect the price of a flat screen TV: Size, resolution and additional features. Hence, some LCD TVs are more expensive than some plasma TVs.
