HEADPHONE BUYING GUIDE

Purchasing a set of headphones may seem like an easy task, but with several brands and a number of designs available it is important to know what to look for. The type of headphones you buy ultimately depends on your lifestyle and budget.

Types of Headphones

Over-the-ears - Whether closed or open, over the ears headphones, such as the Sennheiser RS120 Headphones,  are those that cover the entire ear, generally producing a much better sound and blocking other external noises. They are, however, rather bulky and may not be comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
On Ear - These are the more common type of headphones. They are smaller and generally rest on the ear. Padded with foam or some other cushioning, they are usually easier to wear for long periods of time. However in most cases they do not offer the same rich tones as over the ears headphones.
Portable headphones – like the iFrogz Plugz are ideal for the person on the move, they are small and extremely portable.
Insert-style - Meant to be inserted into the ear canal, these can offer good sound while being portable.
Over the Ear - these fit over the ear. They are considered more comfortable by some, but they are not as easily concealable or as small as insert-style.
Ear Buds - Made popular with the iPod, these are also inserted into the ear. With a bud-like shape, they are one of the more common types of portable headphones these days.
Sports Style – such as the Sennheiser OMX 680 are designed so that they are worn on the back of the head, with the speakers looping over the ears. Sportsmen like this style because they are secure yet out of the way - as well as being portable.
The main thing to consider is in what environment and what application you will use your headphones for and choose a model most appropriate for that. For example, closed, over-the-ear models are great for listening at home but are often too large for travelling. Portable models are ideal for the person on the go but might sacrifice some sound quality for small size. For the person doing a lot of flying, or listening in a noisy environment, consider headphones with active noise-reduction technology.

Important Features

Sound quality - For many people, this is going to be the most important feature. While you may think that the most expensive headphones are going to sound the best, this is not always the case. Before purchasing a set of headphones it can be useful to read customer and expert reviews.
Noise Reduction - If you listen to audio with a lot of other people around or in areas where there is a lot of background noise, you are going to want to invest in a pair of headphones with built in noise reduction measures, like the Sennheiser PXC 250.   While you are generally going to pay more, it is usually very much worth the price.
Durability - As with other products, some brands are better known for being durable than others. Brand such Sennheiser, Bose and AKG offer excellent durability.
Weight - Smaller, lighter headphones, such as the iLuv i301B, are generally more comfortable than bulkier models and ideal for the student backpacker and travelling businessman, although with the smaller design there is often a tradeoff in sound quality.
Volume control- Selected headphones including the AKG K912 Wireless Headphones come with a volume control on the unit; this is especially useful if you are a distance from the music source such as a TV. Some controls are on the headphone's earpiece, while others are along the cord's length.
Comfort- Headphones are often used for extended period of time and as a result may become uncomfortable.  Certain headphones have adjustable straps that can be modified for a comfortable fit, while insert-type earphones usually come with different-sized tips to accommodate a range of ears for a comfortable fit.
Cords- Compared with a Y-exit cord, models with a single-exit cord reduce tangling. Also, some come with asymmetrical cords, where one cord is longer or shorter than the other.
