GPS BUYING GUIDE

Garmin GPS

With the help of a Global Positioning Service (GPS) system you can say goodbye to the days of fumbling with a map book while trying to keep your eyes on the road.

Buying a GPS for your car is a wise investment and it will take a lot of the stress out of driving through new areas. A GPS device makes use of a vast number of satellites orbiting earth and converts the available information into GPS co-ordinates, letting you know exactly where you are and in which direction you should be going to reach your destination.

There are various GPS devices on the market and this guide will help you to decide what features you might need. Generally, the more advanced the device, the more expensive it will be. The basic functions for all GPS receivers are the same; it is the additional features that make the difference.

·         Basic GPS functions

A standard GPS system is able to pinpoint your exact location on a map and the exact location of your destination. It then creates a suggested route, complete with an estimated time of arrival based upon your current speed and the distance to your destination. This is the most common use of private GPS systems and even the cheaper and less sophisticated models, like the Garmin 1200 GPS, are capable of performing these relatively simple functions.

Another standard feature is voice prompting, which alerts you a short while before you need to change direction or turn into a different road. This feature allows you to concentrate on the road ahead instead of following the map.

·         Local maps and navigation

In order for a GPS system to work, it needs to be programmed with a map of the area in which you intend to travel.
Make sure to check whether local maps are included in the price of the device. Many GPS devices, such as the Garmin are issued with a MicroSD™ card that has extensive maps of Southern Africa, whereas with some other models it is necessary to purchase the map software separately.

If you are going to be travelling to another country, it is not necessary to purchase an entirely new GPS system as you should be able to buy an additional MicroSD™ card for maps of other countries. You can then simply replace your current card with the new one and switch back when you return.

Most GPS devices can be personalised using your most frequented locations. All you need to do is program in your favourite destinations (e.g. your home address) and no matter where you are, you can find your way home without typing in your address each time.

Some even have the option to upload images onto your GPS system. You can take a photo of the outside of your house and add it to the system. Next time you need to find your way home easily, just press the photo of your house and follow the map home.

·         Screen size and capability

More expensive models tend to be slightly bigger and often have larger screens, allowing you to see more of the map and better orient yourself within an area. You are able to see a wider range of the surrounding roads and upcoming direction changes will be less of a surprise.

Some GPS models have entertaining and quirky features, added to make your navigating more fun and personal. For example, the Garmin Nuvi 215W GPS gives you the opportunity to download your own icon to represent your vehicle on the map. The icons range from the ordinary to the outrageous, including a helicopter, a truck, a chicken and a broom!

·         Battery life

Most GPS units have a standard battery life of about 4 hours before they need to be recharged. What must be considered is whether the battery is built in or if it can be easily replaced at the end of its lifespan.

More expensive units will have a removable battery which can be replaced once it is no longer able to recharge. The total lifespan of a Lithium-Ion battery is relatively long and it might be a good idea to buy a less expensive GPS unit and upgrade when the battery finally gives out.

GPS has totally revolutionised the way we navigate while driving. Even the most simple of GPS systems will provide you will an easy and enjoyable drive. Visit our website and choose the GPS navigation device that suits you best.
