DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA BUYING GUIDE

Digital Video Camera

Digital Video Cameras are fast becoming a preferred method of documenting events in our lives and, with advancing technology; the choices are becoming increasingly varied. When buying a digital video camera or camcorder, there are a number of factors and features that need to be taken into consideration.

Though brand names can often stand for quality, it is definitely worth shopping around to see which brand might fit your requirements. Make sure that the video camera you choose has all the features you want before taking the plunge and buying it. Some users only need a basic camcorder for occasional use, while others require a much more advanced video camera for professional recordings.

Once you have decided what the primary use for your camera will be, work out which features you require, and focus on finding a camera that matches your needs. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive video camera, or the most intricate, if your needs are fairly basic. By the same token, you may need to buy a more advanced and expensive video camera to fulfil your recording requirements.

In order to purchase the right digital camcorder, you should have some knowledge of the features and functions the various models offer.

Digital video cameras: Features to consider

  • Zoom

Most video cameras include both a digital and optical zoom. Optical zoom is considered the better zoom function to use in order to achieve superb-quality recorded images. For crystal-clear close-up shots, investing in a camera with optical zoom function is essential.

  • Stabiliser

The stabiliser is a must-have feature for any camera user who worries that a trembling or unsteady hand will blur recorded images. A stabiliser on a video camera is exceptionally advantageous: After all, steadier recordings mean less fuzziness and greatly enhanced recording quality.

  • LCD Monitor

New digital video cameras all have LCD monitors which can be used as viewfinders or playback screens. The LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) makes it possible to preview images. It is important to note that the larger the LCD screen is, the more battery power is used, which in effect decreases the time a user has for recording.

  • Recording media

There are various types of recording media available, including the MiniDV, the Hard Disk Drive (HDD), the DVD and SD/SDHC memory card.

Before purchasing a digital video camera, think about how much recording time you’re going to require on average. The recording media that a video camera uses determines the amount of recording time available. If recording time is important, be sure to select a camcorder that uses the appropriate recording media, and which can record for the requisite amount of time.

  • Microphone

If a video camera has a microphone, it is possible to capture audio clips along with visual images. Some microphones are built into the camcorder, while others have external microphones. Certain camcorders have an attachment for a zoom microphone which can capture sound even from a distance, thereby enhancing the quality of the audio clip.

  • CCD

When looking to buy a video camera, the single most important feature is, obviously, the quality of the recording! A video camera user who needs outstanding colour reproduction should opt for a camcorder with 3 CCD.

The bigger the CCD (Charge Couple Device), the better the recorded quality will be. The day-to-day camera user is usually satisfied with a single CCD video camera; however, professional photographers will require far more advanced CCD features.

  • Ports and connectors

It is important to make sure that the video camera comes with all the necessary ports and connectors for downloading, viewing and printing images. These depend on the needs of the individual user.

A PC connection, such as USB or DV In/Out, is very important for users who want to edit footage on their computers or store recordings and video clips. USB and DV transfer footage from the video camera to the computer.

AV Out is necessary to send video footage from the camcorder to a television.
