DIGITAL CAMERA BUYERS GUIDE

When buying a digital camera, it’s important to consider your individual photographic needs before making a selection. Think about where you’ll be taking photos, what they will be of and what they will be used for.

If you merely want to take photos of your holiday for example, your photographic needs will be very different to those of a professional photographer – so it’s vital to consider your digital photography needs carefully before purchasing a digital camera.

There are several different camera brands to choose from, including Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus. Each brand offers a variety of different cameras, which can make buying one rather intimidating – but thanks to Nashua Electronics’ comprehensive buying guide, you can take the guesswork out of choosing the ideal camera for your photographic needs.

Should I buy an SLR or digital compact camera?

Canon 1000D SLR Camera

When you’re in the market to buy a camera, it is important to know the difference between an SLR camera and a digital compact camera. Knowing the difference will narrow down the choice significantly and simplify the process of selecting the right digital camera to suit your lifestyle.

A digital SLR camera, like the hugely popular Canon 450D, is suitable for those who enjoy the art of photography, and are looking for a camera that combines technical functionality with complete manual control.

A compact camera is also known as a point-and-shoot camera. Compact cameras, such as the Nikon Coolpix range, Sony Cybershot range, Panasonic FS/FX range, or Olympus MJU / FE Range are suitable for beginners and intermediate camera users, as well as for those who need a simple portable camera to use whenever the urge takes them!

What about an in-between hybrid model?

Most of the major camera manufacturers have noticed that many people want a hybrid unit. This is a camera with many of the SLR features like bigger lens, better pop-up flash etc but still in a compact frame with fixed lens. Cameras like the Panasonic FZ Range (specifically the DMC-FZ50), the Olympus SP Range (specifically the SP560UZ) fall into this category. This market is for the casual photographer who wants a little more quality, power, and control. These units are also for the somewhat semi-pro photographer who may have previously had an SLR, but found they hardly ever swapped off the standard 18-200mm lens. On an upgrade they are looking for something with a built in lens that is the same or slightly better than an 18-200mm they became fond of before.

Factors to consider when buying a digital camera:

·
Megapixels

The amount of megapixels in a digital photograph or image influences the quality of the image. This means that the more megapixels a photograph has, the higher the resolution of the images – and the clearer, crisper and more defined the image.

The size of the images a user wants to print is one of the determining factors when deciding on the ideal digital camera. If you are wanting to enlarge the prints of the photographs, you will need a digital camera with a much higher resolution.

With a 3 megapixel camera for example, you can print up to 250 x 300 mm good quality images, whereas a camera with 10 megapixels, such as the Panasonic DMC-FS20, can produce larger good quality images – and so forth. The more megapixels a camera has, the better the quality of the images it produces.

·         Zoom

Digital cameras have two types of zoom functions: Digital zoom and optical zoom. Most cameras feature both zoom functions, and it is advisable to select a digital camera that offers both, rather than just digital zoom. If, however, you opt for a camera that features only one type of zoom, it is best to purchase a unit with optical zoom. The optical zoom ensures that high-quality photographs are produced when using the zoom function.

·         Memory

Images are stored in the memory of a digital camera. There are two main types of memory: Internal or built-in memory, and expansion memory (removable memory).

The expansion memory is valuable to most digital camera users because it enables one to store more and more images as one’s photographic needs expand. Removable memory cards fit into the expansion slot, giving users the opportunity to purchase a bigger memory card, and hence capture and store a greater number of photos.

SD Cards are fast becoming the standard, highest performing, cost effective solution. It would be wise to choose a camera that supports this technology. Click here to see our range of camera memory.

·         LCD

The LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is an appealing feature of most digital cameras. The LCD allows a digital camera user to preview an image before it is taken, as well as to see images on the LCD screen after they have been taken.

·         Connectivity

When purchasing a digital camera, a user should make sure that the camera has two types of connectivity – USB and AV Out.

The USB port is used to connect the digital camera to a computer. By doing this, images can be downloaded onto the computer and the full-size images viewed, edited and printed. It is important to ensure that the camera and computer are compatible with one another.

The AV Out connection allows a user to connect the digital camera to a television set, where image-viewing can be enjoyed on a larger screen.

When purchasing a digital camera it is important to consider the guidelines mentioned above. For extra tips, take a look at our general camera buyers’ guide and Canon camera buyers’ guide .
